It’s just that when I go out the first thing I see is…

The pile of trash someone dumped on the corner. The homeless man pushing a cart of collected belongings. I wonder what is there. What he values enough to push around with him everywhere he goes. I smile as I pass him, sometimes he sees me, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he smiles back, sometimes not. I wonder what it is like to have everything in a shopping cart. Where the cart came from? Where this man comes from? What is his story? His experience of the world? What circumstances, choices, etc. led to this very moment of us passing…?

I wonder all of this in the early morning, while it is cool and I am still waking fully. Before I put one head phone in and walk to work, where I will be busy and forget all about him.
