A Last Day of Sorts

When a Monday Marks an End Rather Than a Beginning

Today is the last full day I have with no other commitments before I start a new full time job. For the last couple years I have been working part time at a job I love. I got to use administrative skills that I have and learn all sorts of new things that come with the territory of running a unique business and working for an entrepreneur. The creativity was the best part, not always easy, but often fun. I got to write as part of work!

I had side gigs, because here in the Bay Area one is lucky enough to have a full time job that supports them, but a part time job that pays rent, the bills and has money left over for food is practically a miracle. I often joke that here everyone has their job, and their side hustle, and their art, and their side art hustle. I chuckle and then sigh at the truth of it.

I won’t pretend it hasn’t been hard at times when money has been tight, but I have also had the gift of time and flexibility. Which, when I made the transition out of my last full time job, I know I was craving. I got to travel more and write more, but also spent time feeling guilty for not writing more.

I know I will still write. I am only about a third of the way through this challenge. Time will have to be structured differently. I will have to get used to setting aside time for writing in a different way. I am reminding myself that this is a choice and not a surrender, going back to an office. My art is my art, and my words are my words, and for now my income will be separate from both. For now anyway, it’s all temporary as they say.
